May 2025

The Macular Society’s Scottish Borders-based group for people with sight loss continues to hold monthly meetings to support people living with macular conditions.

The group now meets on the first Monday of each month from 1.30pm–3pm at the ASDA Superstore, Currie Road, Galashiels TD1 2AG, in the Community Room. Attendees should meet by the Customer Service kiosk.

Transport is available for those living in the Scottish Borders and experiencing sight loss. Thanks to support from the Borders Talking Newspaper, accessible free transport is now available for those who need help getting to the group. To discuss options, including pick-up points or door-to-door service, please contact the group organiser directly.

The local group is open to everyone – whether you’re newly diagnosed, a long-standing member, or supporting someone with macular disease. Family members, friends, and carers are always welcome. The group offers a safe, friendly environment where people can gain peer support, share experiences, and grow in confidence.

Each month features a different guest speaker and a chance to hear about local services, learn more about macular disease, and enjoy a relaxed social atmosphere over a cup of tea.

Our speaker for our next meeting on 2 June, is Ian White from RNIB. He will be joining us to share more about his role providing invaluable information and support for blind and visually impaired people in communities across the Borders.
